Russian photographer Vadim Trunov’s forte was always nature photography. But not even in his wildest dream he would have thought that these tiny animals would give the shots of his life. We are talking about squirrels here which are passed over by most photographers for their lack of ‘glamour’ as wild animals. For some, squirrels are not ‘wild enough’. But Vadim Trunov had other ideas when he first saw them outside the city of Voronezh in a thick snow covered forest.
During winter the ground gets a thick snow cover and food becomes scarce. In fact, food was so scarce that it made a simple pine cone look like a tasty treat for these two squirrels who apparently had to muscle each other out to get it.
So what was basically a regular winter activity for these two squirrels came out like the cutest photos you will ever see of these animals – all thanks to Vadim’s brilliant execution.
I put a pine cone in the snow, walked away, and waited. After some time, the squirrel ran up and started to gnaw it hungrily.
A little while later a second squirrel appeared, this one tried to banish the first squirrel and lunged at her. It was amazing to see because they both would spring into the air, it was truly fascinating to watch. But the first one squirrel was not going to give her cone. She grabbed the cone and jumped to her. Then she attacked and chased away her opponent.
Said Vadim describing his experience with these tiny creatures.
