World’s largest imaging expo, the Photokina 2016, is just around the corner. Just like every year, this year too, all big and small imaging companies from across the world will come to the show with their latest and best photo gadgets. So here at Light n Focus we thought we would bring you a roundup of the hottest and the best Photokina 2016 rumors and gossips that are currently in circulation on the web. This would be a three part article where we would cover only the major camera makers like Canon, Nikon, Sony, Olympus, Pentax, Fujifilm and GoPro. Today on this Photokina 2016 rumors article we would cover Canon and Olympus.
Photokina 2016 Rumors: Canon
The ever so elusive mirrorless announcement:
Earlier the hottest product of the Photokina in the Canon stall was slated to be the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, but after the camera got officially announced interest in that as far as the gossip circles are concerned seems to have lessened. What has taken its place is a supposed announcement of a full-frame 24 megapixel mirrorless from the company. This rumor was going around since the month of April, but somehow got overshadowed by the talk around the 5D Mark IV. What could be of added interest to Canon lovers in general and mirrorless lovers in specific is the fact that rumor mills are buzzing with talk that not one, but two mirrorless could be announced by Canon – one of which would be an entry-level one. We don’t have much info with us about the entry-level one, but we can confirm to you that the full-frame mirrorless (to be called EOS M5) will have features like a 24.2 megapixel full-frame sensor and will have a classic mirrorless design.
The EOS C700:
Earlier, we had assumed that the EOS C700 would be announced at the Photokina, but the camera has been officially announced by Canon just two days back. So it’s now confirmed that Canon will be bringing the C700 to the Photokina. The newly announced C700 features a Super 35mm 4.5K sensor, which boasts a wide dynamic range up to 15 stops of latitude. Other features include 4K/60p and 2K/240p recording capability, DeSqueeze and Apple ProRes compatibility.
The fight in the superzoom arena:
In the point and shoot market Canon is under quite a bit of pressure since the launch of the Nikon P900. Now rumor mills are buzzing that Canon will also launch a superzoom camera with something like a 100x zoom. Don’t believe us? Canon already has three superzoom lenses patented with more than 100x capability. Last time the company launched a superzoom point-and-shoot was almost two years back when it launched the Powershot SX60 HS. So it’s high time that Canon upgrades the SX60 HS into something like a SX100 HS or launch a whole new camera. Otherwise, it will only be surrendering that market to Nikon.
The SD Card like Wi-Fi adapter
Now this one is pretty unique. Canon is actually developing an SD card shaped Wi-Fi adapter named W-E1, which it may formally introduce to the world at the Photokina 2016. Designed to fit into Canon SD slots, the card is supposed to be used in conjunction with CF cards and can transmit files up to a distance of 30 feet. The card can also be controlled through a smartphone.
Not to forget the lenses:
Canon will probably also officially announce two new lenses – an EF-M 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM unit and a EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III. It is likely that the EF-M 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM lens would be offered along with the new full-frame mirrorless camera. As far as the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III is concerned, we are not yet sure if this lens would be announced or not as rumors mills regarding this one have somehow died down of late.
Photokina 2016 Rumors: Olympus
That big E-M1 Mark II announcement:
The biggest rumor doing the rounds when it comes to Olympus is definitely the official announcement of the E-M1 Mark II. Sources have revealed to us that it is highly likely that the camera would be announced just before the start of the Photokina. According to information we have, the E-M1 Mark II update will be aimed more at sports photographers and shooting at higher shutter speeds. Therefore, you can expect better autofocussing ability along with better tracking and stabilization options. Rumors also have it that the camera would have a ‘high-resolution’ mode which will work handheld, while previously this option required a tripod. But we cannot confirm this at this point.
Lenses that we could see
It’s also being said that Olympus is also working on a few prime lenses for Micro Four Thirds system cameras which will be revealed during the Photokina. One of which could be the M.Zuiko 25mm f/1.2 PRO lens.
A lot of rumors and images of the E-PL 8. Whether or not the camera would be revealed at the Photokina is anybody’s guess, but we hear the camera would have a 16 megapixel image sensor and will be amongst the lightest and smallest mirrorless to be made by any company.
In the next part of Photokina 2016 rumors we would bring to you the rumors doing the rounds about Nikon, Sony and Panasonic.
