Most car commercials involve big budget, but for photographer Felix Hernandez all it took was a 1/43 scaled Audi Q2 model, a few sand papers, LED lights and foam cores. He shot an entire ad for Audi Middle-East in his own studio. Don’t get fooled. Just because Hernandez was working with ‘toy cars’, papers and scissors, it does not mean the work was easy.
Where I normally work with 1/18 scale models, for the Q2 launch I was commissioned to do a series of photographies using a 1/43 scale model. This was my first time doing this kind of photography with such a small model and it was challenging, explained Hernandez.
The biggest challenge was of course making the 1/43 scale model cars look realistic and full-size in the ads. He used sand papers, LED and foam core to create realistic roadways for the cars and something called polvo fino (a very fine powder) and water to create realistic desert dunes. He then travelled to Dubai along with photographer Adrian Sommeling and captured this image below to show the Audi Q2 in front of an iconic middle-eastern landscape.
Final outcome is of course stunning like all of Hernandez’s work. So next time you get an assignment from a big company, think out of the box like Hernandez did and come up with something like this.
