So what happens when a leopard grabs a piglet? The mother warthog charges and sends the leopard flying in the air making it lose its grip on the baby warthog. Seems unusual? This is exactly what happened a few days back at the Kruger National Park in South Africa and dramatic pictures of this incident was captured by Koos Fourie.
As the pictures show, the warthog won the battle and successfully saved her baby from the leopard’s jaws. The images were captured while Koos Fourie was on a safari at the park.
“We saw the three warthogs running in the road ahead of us.I decided to stop to take a picture of the warthogs. I parked my vehicle in the road, opened the window and focused on the biggest warthog” said Mr. Fourie.
He further added, “When I pushed the shutter of my camera I heard a noise and thought it was the piglets fighting with one another. But it was a leopard who had appeared from nowhere and caught one of the warthog piglets. The leopard was trying to pin her potential kill to the ground and the piglet was screaming and kicking to try and get away from the leopard. The next moment, the mother came running back from behind my vehicle at full speed dropping her head and hit the leopard in the rib cage.”
The warthog mother charged the leopard for the second time and made the leopard lose its grip on the baby warthog. Even more courageous was the fact that the warthog mother chased the leopard away from her baby.
“There was also a lesson from nature for me where we witnessed the care of a mother for her baby. She has put her own life at risk to save her baby’s life and this made me decide to call the event ‘fight for life”, said Mr. Fourie summing up the whole sequence.
