Detailed Nikon D7500 Specifications, Reviews, Sample Images, Pre-order Links and Much More

Nikon recently announced its new D7500 DSLR – the fourth in the D7000 series. Since its announcement, the Nikon D7500 has received mixed response where some have flayed it for the lack dual SD card slots and some are ecstatic since it will carry D500’s sensor. Let us now take a look at various Nikon D7500 specifications in detail and try and figure out if it really is worth upgrading to.

Detailed Nikon D7500 Specifications:

Design and sensor:

The Nikon D7500 has a smaller and lighter monocoque carbon fiber composite body. The camera is 5% lighter compared to the Nikon D7200 and is also slimmer and shorter in dimension. The camera body is weather sealed, which means come rain or snow, shooting with it won’t be a problem.

But the biggest advantage (read USP) of the Nikon D7500 is the fact that it carries the same sensor as the much higher priced Nikon D500. You will get the same 20.9 megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor in the D7500 which is currently there in the D500. But there is a catch. The sensor size in the D7500 is a little bit smaller compared to the D500. While the D500 sensor dimension is 23.5 x 15.7 mm, the sensor dimension in the D7500 is 23.5 x 15.6 mm (More keeping in tune with the D7200).

But the biggest criticism in the sensor front is the reduction in megapixel count since the Nikon D7200 came with a 24.2 megapixel sensor. But we believe that the decrease in megapixel count won’t matter much when comes to picture quality and the D7500 will have better image quality compared to the D7200. The reduction in megapixel count will also improve the camera’s burst performance.

ISO Range:

The Nikon D7500 gets a big change here as well. It gets a native ISO range of 100-51,200 which can be expanded to 50-1,640,000. The Nikon D7200 had an ISO range of 100 – ISO 25600 (expandable up to 102,400 in black and white).

Autofocus points:

No change can be seen here. Just like the Nikon D7200, the D7500 also comes with 51-point phase-detection AF points with 15 cross-types. Autofocus modes include dynamic area autofocus (9, 21 or 51 points), single-point AF, 3D-tracking and group-area autofocus. The group area autofocus is a relatively new feature for Nikon cameras and is found in their pro models.

LCD Resolution:

Another big change in the Nikon D7500 (compared to the D7200) is the availability of the tilting LCD screen. The display now has touchscreen controls with 921,600 dots. Touchscreen means you can now control menus, setup, playback with swiping through images, as well as tap-to-focus in Live View mode.

Processor:

Here also a similarity between the D7500 and the D500 can be seen since both have the very high-performing EXPEED 5 processor. Nikon claims that with EXPEED 5 processor the D7500 will be 30% faster than the D7200. And it is true since the D7500 can shoot 8 fps (with 100 JPEG or 50 RAW) compared to D7200’s 6 fps (100 JPEG or 27 RAW). So if you are into shooting sports or wildlife this would definitely excite you.

One SD card Slot:

This is probably the biggest point of criticism for the Nikon D7500. While the Nikon D7000, D7100 and the D7200 all had dual SD card slots, the D7500 comes with only one. Reason for removing the second SD card slot is probably lack of space since the camera is slimmer and smaller compared to its predecessor. Another disadvantage on this front is the fact that while the camera supports UHS-I cards, it does not yet support UHS-II cards.
